Patrick Purdy (Stockton schoolyard shooting,1989) – opened fire at Cleveland Elementary School in Stockton, California, killing five young children and wounding 30 more before turning the weapon on himself January 17, 1989. Purdy, 24, had an “extensive criminal history” including narcotics and weapon violations and soliciting for sex. Purdy was under psychiatric treatment and prescribed the anti-psychotic drug Thorazine and the antidepressant Amitriptyline when he committed the attack.

The Stockton schoolyard shooting was one of the deadliest at its time and “[T]he catalyst

for the original legislative frenzy to ban ‘semiautomatic assault weapons’ in California.”
