Christopher Pittman (Chester, South Carolina 2001) – fatally shot his grandparents as they slept on November 28, 2001 before burning down their home outside Chester, South Carolina. Growing up in an unhappy home with a stern father, Pittman,12-years-old at the time of the attack, ran away from home and threatened suicide, leading to him be sent to a psychiatric center for six days where he was prescribed Paxil.

His grandparents brought him to their home in upstate South Carolina where Pittman was given a starter dose of Zoloft. After complaining that his skin felt like it was on fire, rather than remove Pittman from the drug, his doctor doubled his dose. The night of the murders, Pittman complained of being unable sleep due to hearing voices that were telling him to kill his grandparents. The boy sat in jail for three years until prosecutors were able to try him as an adult at 15, sentencing him to 30 years in prison.

*Zoloft is not approved for children, yet is widely prescribed to younger patients.
